The Argentine soccer season will not begin as scheduled after a financial row forced the AFA to suspend the Apertura.

“For the time being there will be no soccer,” Julio Grondona, the head of the Argentine Football Association said Tuesday. The issue: debts totaling 40 million pesos at clubs like River Plate, Independiente, Racing, Newell’s and Rosario Central, according to The Buenos Aires Herald. Negotiations over a new TV deal and a plan to relax Internet betting in an effort to generate revenue for the clubs broke down, leaving cash-strapped teams in the lurch.

The Associated Press reports that Argentine clubs have been hurt by a decline in transfers fees from European clubs for young players, which many teams depend on for revenue.
